Andres Bonifacio Children: Bonifacio is known as “The Father of the Philippine Revolution” and is regarded as one of the Philippines’ national heroes.
Andrés Bonifacio y de Castro, known as the “Father of the Philippine Revolution” against Spanish occupation, was born to working-class parents in Manila in the mid-nineteenth century.
After being forced to drop out of school due to his parents’ untimely death, he began working at the age of 14 to care for his younger siblings.
Nonetheless, he continued to study privately, gaining comprehensive knowledge and becoming aware of Spanish oppression in the process.
He cofounded Katipunan at the age of 29 to overthrow Spanish rule through armed revolution.
At the age of 32, he was elected Presidente Supremo. When the armed revolution broke out a year later, his unit did not fare well.

In 1893, Andres Bonifacio, the Supremo or leader of the Katipunan or Philippine independence movement, married Gregoria de Jesus.
The couple was deeply committed to the cause of independence from Spanish colonial rule. Gregoria gave birth to a baby boy named Andres after his father in early 1896.
Amid their difficult battle against the Spanish authorities, this brought great joy to Bonifacio and his wife.
Little Andres symbolized future hope – a future in which Filipino children could grow up free in their independent nation.
Tragically, baby Andres contracted smallpox as an infant and became critically ill. Despite his parents’ desperate attempts to save him, the disease took his life.
Bonifacio and de Jesus were devastated by the death of their only child. It was a painful personal blow that added to the daily hardships they had already endured for the sake of the Katipunan’s independence fight.
Though the Bonifacios remained devoted to the nationalist cause, the premature death of baby Andres remained a source of deep sorrow and regret in their hearts.
The tragedy shaped their lives, even as they fought against all odds for the Filipino people’s freedom and self-determination.
Meet Andres Bonifacio wife
Andres Bonifacio was married to Monica of Palomar before his more famous marriage to Gregoria de Jesus. Monica was Bonifacio’s Tondo neighbour when they married. Unfortunately, little is known about their marriage, including the exact date.
What is known is that Monica contracted leprosy, which was an incurable and highly stigmatized disease at the time. Monica died from the illness just one year after their wedding.
Her death must have been heartbreaking for the young Bonifacio, and they never had the chance to have children together before she died of leprosy.
Andres Bonifacio was 29 years old when he met Gregoria de Jesus, who was 18 at the time. Gregoria was born into a wealthy landowning family in Caloocan.
Her father was a prominent citizen who supported Andres and Gregoria’s marriage plans. The couple married in a formal Catholic ceremony at Binondo Church in 1893.
They had chosen to follow this Christian ritual despite Bonifacio’s position as Katipunan leader, demonstrating his open-mindedness.
On the same day, they held the secret Katipunan wedding rites to formalize their commitment before the nationalist brotherhood. Andres and Gregoria’s marriage proved to be a long-lasting union founded on love and their shared revolutionary ideals.
